Are SMART Goals Enough For Ambitious Girls?

If you’ve been in the business world a while, you’ve no doubt heard of SMART goals. The SMART method is a goal-setting process for determining if a goal is the right one for you right now. But what does SMART stand for in business, and does it go far enough for ambitious female business owners like you who want to accomplish amazing things?

Here’s the tea on SMART goal-setting and what we REALLY think about it for female business owners.

What Is A SMART Goal?

SMART is a well-known framework to clearly define goals and objectives in business (or indeed, life!).

SMART is an acronym – it stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.

The idea is that your goal has to be all of those things if you want to achieve it in a meaningful and effective way.

Let’s break down those five concepts and explore them a little further, relating them to small businesses founded by women like us.

Specific

As a solo female entrepreneur, it’s crucial to set clear a specific goal that outlines exactly what you want to achieve, with no room for confusion (nothing worse than looking back and being unsure whether you actually did it).

Rather than a woolly objective like “increase sales”, a goal with specificity might be “increase the number of monthly sales by 20% by expanding my client base and launching new services.”

Measurable

Being a one-woman brand, you need to set quantifiable targets to track progress effectively.

This means setting numerical benchmarks and milestones you can celebrate, both at the end and along the way.

For you, this might mean you hit a certain financial figure or increase the number of clients you work with within a specific period.

Achievable

As a self-employed woman, you need goals that are challenging yet attainable in the context of your current resources and capabilities.

Let’s face it, there’s no hyped up sales team behind you, so be honest about what’s possible within your means.

Setting achievable goals ensures you maintain motivation and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

For example, if you’re a freelance designer, aiming to secure three new clients per quarter might be a realistic target to strive for.

Relevant

Your goals should align with your personal and professional ambitions as a female entrepreneur.

They should reflect what matters to you and add to the overall success and growth of your business. This could involve setting goals that help you build your brand, enhance your skills, or increase your visibility in your industry.

Time-bound

Everyone works better with a deadline, right? Without a deadline, it’s difficult to feel that sense of urgency to actually take the relevant steps and your goals can also get forgotten amid the daily grind.

So, if you’re going to actually achieve the goal, setting timescales is crucial for keeping yourself accountable and maintaining momentum.

Specific timeframes for achieving your goals helps you stay focused and ensures steady progress has been made towards your dreams.

For instance, setting a deadline to launch a new product or service within the next three months provides a clear target to work towards.

Is Setting SMART Goals Important To Reach Your Goals?

Yes and no!

Honestly, we’re fans of using the SMART goal framework for goal setting.

But us being us, we like to take things one step further to make it work better for the female entrepreneurs we support.

So, as a Goals Gal you’ll work to our SMARTER goals framework.

The additional letters stand for:

Exciting

Does your goal fill you with excitement and energy, or is it just what you feel like you should be doing?

Asking yourself this question ensures your goals aren’t someone else’s. Because the fact is, there’s very little satisfaction to be had from achieving an end goal you didn’t want to achieve deep down, and you’re way less likely to actually do it anyway.

Realistic

Unrealistic goals are a fast track to frustration, self-doubt, and a sense of failure that has no place in your business!

Let’s make your goals realistic yet dreamy.

Using the SMART framework with an extra ER, we’ll give you a healthy reality check on your goals and make sure they’re going to work for you. This might mean nudging you to aim higher, or lovingly guiding you away from disappointment.

Can you use SMART goals for personal stuff too?

Absolutely. Within our goal-getting framework, we encourage you to have business, financial, and personal goals so you’re setting exciting and attainable targets in every area of your life.

This is always 100% personal to you. Maybe you’re trying to improve your mental health, read more, take on a fitness challenge, or try a new hobby. Whatever it is, you’ll get an amazing feeling of pride when you accomplish this goal using the SMART goal framework (with the extra ER!).

So, if you want to grow your business while also developing personally, surrounded by support from relatable and motivational mentors and likeminded female business owners, this is the space for you.
